Miss Earth Quebec winners and contestants are committed to the environment

Working in the public school system, I am always amazed how well our students are aware about the importance of environmental matters and taking care of our planet. While this attitude comes through all year long, the media pay special attention on Earth Day.

With that in mind, our elementary and high schools were very busy on April 22. I visited a number of them, including Carlyle Elementary in Town of Mount Royal. This school recently gained   entry into the prestigious  International Baccalaureate®Primary Years Programme  PYP).

When Miss Earth Canada National Director  Ronaldo Soriano Trono called to offer a visit of some of his contestants to a school, I immediately thought of Carlyle. Miss Earth Quebec winners for 2013 and 2014 respectively, Elizabeth Ojeil and Marie Antonette Carbon as well as contestants  Sarah Donia Cherif and Maria Jose Acosta made a very good impression with the staff and students.

Miss Earth Canada is an annual competition in which the winner must show her commitment to environmental awareness and the  preservation of the planet. They are given the opportunity to highlight these goals through events locally and internationally.

Elizabeth studied tourism, but now runs her own store selling specialized chocolates in Laval. Both Marie and Sarah are studying nursing. Maria is a student  in criminology at Champlain College on the South Shore and wants to pursue international law.

It is clear from talking to these young ladies that they are not only beautiful, but very intelligent and committed to the environment. While the students asked them some very impressive questions on such matters as pollution, recycling and natural resources.
